The Ultimate Mini x86 System: APC208

Earlier, we shared with you the world's smallest x86 single-board computer, the KIWI310, and now we have obtained the exclusive case for the KIWI310. Through clever structural design, the manufacturer has made the entire system very compact and solid. Let's take a quick preview of the accessories included in this APC208 case.

The whole system includes the original KIWI310 system board, and also retains the high-quality Heatsink, which looks very suitable for DIY enthusiasts.

We have created a quick preview of the APC208 accessories using numbered labels and an exploded view. The overall structure is quite simple, and those with some DIY experience should be able to easily assemble it. The APC208 case is currently available as an optional accessory, but the manufacturer plans to package it with the KIWI310 system board in the future. Therefore, the KIWI310 board is still sold as a single-item package, as we previously shared.

  1. Top Cover x 1

  2. M3*4L Screws x 5

  3. Heatsink x 1

  4. SMT Gasket x 1

  5. KIWI310 SBC

  6. Bottom Cover x 1

  7. Antenna Mount Cover x 2

  8. Thermal Pad x 1

  9. Copper Pillars M3L x 1

Next, let's see how easy it is to assemble a mini-computer.

First, we need to prepare the KIWI310 and Heatsink. As we are assembling the APC208 microsystem, we will be replacing the 4 screws with 4 copper standoffs. During the assembly process, we need to make sure to align them with the corresponding screw holes.

Attaching the copper pillars is quite simple with just hand-tightening, but you will still need a 5mm hex socket tool to secure them. Following the manufacturer's recommendation, the torque value should be set to 4kgf-cm.

Next, we need to apply an SMT Gasket between the Rear IO and the PCB, which is commonly seen in high-end EMC/EMI compliance devices. This helps to insulate and conduct, to some extent, protecting the delicate components on the KIWI310 board.

You can simply apply the SMT gasket along the edge of the PCB and the Heatsink.

Next, place the Bottom Cover over the Rear IO and align it with the two locking holes on the other end. Use a cross-head screwdriver to secure it in place. It's really that simple, isn't it?

Next, take out the thermal pad and remove the transparent release liner. Then, align the thermal pad with the surface of the heatsink and stick it on.

Next, take out the Top Cover and place it over the assembly.

A quick comparison reveals that the screw holes and IO positioning of the casing are both very precise, demonstrating careful and thoughtful design.

After fastening the five screws of the outer casing, the assembly process is complete. Compared to traditional personal computers that require manual comparison with the instruction manual, tedious wire assembly and configuration, using the KIWI310 with the APC208 mini system is truly effortless.

Finally, let's use a ruler to compare the width of APC208's Rear IO, which is only 6 centimeters, and with the Mount Bracket, it's only 8 centimeters wide. This makes it very space-saving on the desktop.

The width of APC208 is less than 10 centimeters, making it easy to carry around. It can work by simply connecting it to a display and input devices such as a mouse. It is truly very convenient.

In conclusion, the original KIWI310 was already a fascinating single-board computer, but with the addition of the APC208, it now has an extra layer of protection that allows you to take it anywhere without worrying about damage from collisions. Both the APC208 and KIWI310 adhere to the industrial computer standard of fanless design and high-density integration, with core components such as DRAM, storage media, and CPU on board, eliminating the problem of loose connections caused by movement or vibration during transport. This also reduces the need for unnecessary troubleshooting due to false faults. The compact configuration is ideal for use as a secondary computer for work or entertainment. We look forward to seeing what interesting products and accessories the KIWI series will produce next.
